We all know that YouTube has led to some athletes earning a decent amount of money for their viral videos. However, among the many, Ryan Taylor, 23, is infamous for being one of the most controversial heavyweights. With a video of him headbutting opponent Jim Alabi landing him with a five-year ban and a $50,000 fine from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), is it that hard to believe that he is fighting on TV again? But what we don’t know is how he was doing it. And now the authorities have got hold of his video, which shows him headbutting Alabi loud enough for us to hear. This is a sad story. The story of a man who downplayed the weight and came up with a monstrous punch against an opponent whilst under the effect of drugs. This was a fight many had thought would be a turning point in his career. This entire incident was marred by controversy on many levels. He was disqualified from the bout and subsequently stripped of his middleweight world title after facing criticism for his actions. YouTuber Ryan Taylor was fast becoming a social media star with his comical MMA takedowns, but one brutal headbutt in his first boxing bout caught him on the wrong side of the wrong sport.
Fighting Connor Jameson-Bowen at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday night (UK time), Mr. Taylor was disqualified by referee Howard Foster for his illegal strike. ‘That shouldn’t have happened,’ said Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless before watching the footage repeatedly. Ryan Taylor, a British boxer and YouTube sensation, who was famous for posting videos of himself training and sparring, had his career derailed in 2017. The 26-year-old from England was disqualified from a fight with Sebastien Debesse after delivering what the referee called a “very calculated and deliberate” headbutt in the second round. One day after the match, Taylor posted on Instagram that he has no regrets over the incident, despite it likely putting an end to his boxing career.
