NEW YORK (Reuters) – A man with a rap sheet for burglary, assault, and drug possession was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with an unprovoked subway hammer attack that left two New York City commuters with serious heads injuries. Kari Bazemore, accused of beating a young father over the head with an 18-inch tire iron as he awaited a Manhattan-bound Q train at 135th Street station in Queens during the early-morning rush hour on Monday, is due in court later in the afternoon on charges of attempted murder and two counts of assault.

Police said the Nautilus Fitness employee brandished a tire iron and attacked three men who were leaning against a railing or sitting on a bench inside the underground station in Corona. The victim, who the police have not identified, works as a janitorial supervisor at Columbia University. According to police, Williams approached the victim on the train without saying a word and attacked him with a hammer. The suspect then fled from the train as it pulled into the next stop moments later.
